Afternoon Tea at the White Horse Romsey

Living in Romsey, I’m no stranger to The White Horse Brassiere. Usually, my husband and I indulge in the 7 course-tasting menu by the incredibly talented Nick O’Halloran and his team (which I would highly recommend by the way). However on this occasion, SistersDineOut experienced the charming Afternoon Tea in the beautiful oak-beamed lounge. Having been ‘Highly Commended’ by the Afternoon Tea awards in July 2018, we were feeling rather excited to get stuck in.

One of the things I love the most about afternoon tea at The White Horse is their extensive range of teas. And not just any teas, they serve the wonderful Tea Pigs range and to top it off…you can switch flavours to your hearts content! It sounds like something so small, but we feel it really adds to you afternoon tea experience. For us, we started off with something light and fresh, lemongrass for Emma and lemon & ginger for me. When our sweets arrived, we swapped over to the delightfully floral jasmine tea.

As well as being offered every flavour of tea under the sun, we also opted for a cocktail each to enjoy with our sandwiches. Queue the Kir Royal and Cosmopolitan! Both delicious and if we didn’t have to drive afterwards, both would have defiantly been re ordered.

For us, the sweet course is without a doubt our favourite part of an afternoon tea experience; however, I still feel we need to give the sandwiches at The White Horse (WHR) a little shout out. Sometimes keeping it simple is the way forward and we both felt that the WHR nailed it with their finger sandwiches, not too fancy, not to plain and just the right amount to get you started.

On the menu
Fingers Sandwiches
Egg & mustard cress
Hot smoked Chalk Stream trout & horseradish
Traditional cucumber
Honey roasted ham & mustard mayonnaise

Sweets
Top Tier
White chocolate and strawberry Scaher Torte
Macaroons

Middle Tier
Fruit & plain scone with Dorset
(accompanied by clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry preserve)

Bottom Tier
Lemon & Raspberry Mille-Feuille
Millionaire’s Shortbread
Fruit & Nut Flapjack
Jaffa Cake

We decided to get started with a warm scone and lashings of clotted cream and strawberry preserve before moving on to the tasty cakes and pastries. My favourite of the sweets was the Lemon & Raspberry Mille-Feuille. Filled with cream, you would expect it would be heavy and dense, but it was quiet the opposite, light and fluffy, I could have happily eaten a tray of just these! Although, I am glad I didn’t otherwise I would have missed the other treats that lay before me.

Slowly after working our way through our tea and cakes, we had to admit defeat and couldn’t quiet squeeze in the second scone. But do not fear, there is no waste where we are concerned! The White Horse were more than happy to box up our scones to ensure that nothing was wasted. After all, we are not a fan of wasting cake in our household.

We had a fantastic experience at the White Horse in Romsey. The service was impeccable (as it always is when we visit) and the food was perfection. We can’t wait to go back soon!
