Dinner, Wildtale, Vancouver

So I was lucky enough to spend three weeks in the autumn travelling down the west coast of Canada and the US.  We could have spent a lot more time there but I'm hoping to bring you some of the culinary highlights of my trip there over the next few months incase you are ever there and lucky enough to experience the beautiful area.

Our first stop was Vancouver, B.C. (such a beautiful city would highly recommend a three week visit itself!) and our first night we weren't sure where to head to.  Our hotel was very central so we decided to just walk and see what we fancied.  Heading into Yaletown there were a huge number of restaurants and bars to choose from so was a tough choice, but we both liked the look of the Wildtale menu and decided to give it a try.

The restaurant itself is really lovely - a contemporary feel with clean lines and stainless steel but with warmth from wood panelling, open brick and strong colours. Very comfortable seating at various levels - we were lucky enough to have a tall table near the bar which allowed us to watch the barman putting together his creations and see the magic being done in the open kitchen.  All the staff were very friendly and open to giving suggestions for food and for drink.

The menu itself is dedicated to local ingredients, so as you would expect being on the coast offers some amazing local seafood options.  We started with the squid to share, served just the right size in breadcrumbs, tomato, chilli and chives and served with a tomato and chilli aoili.  It was really delicious.

To follow, I had to try local Ahi Tuna together with vegetable fried rice, kale, zucchini and runner beans, and one of the nicest sauces I've had with fish.  The tuna was perfectly cooked to my liking, and the fried rice tasted insane with something extra like honey or soy in there to make it work so well with the fish and vegetables.  It was also presented beautifully, and for North America where you are prepared for massive portions this was the perfect size.

Desserts did not disappoint either sharing two between us because we couldn't decide!  First up was a classic Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée with berries and a cookie (yep you heard right, a whole chocolate chip cookie - two desserts in one whats not to love!?!).  This was a very good dessert and had a good crack on top of the brûlée which I love.  Secondly we had the Peanut Butter Mascarpone Cheesecake which was really light and perfectly balanced with some berries.  I enjoyed every mouthful but it was just a bit too much for me to finish it.

We finished off with coffee and some banter with the barman - if you like strong coffee this wouldn't be for you it could do with a shift up but it still tasted good and was well made.

Overall this is a real treat in Vancouver in terms of quality of food, a local experience and a fun atmosphere.  The food and drink menu would accommodate everyone's wallets and the service is very friendly.  Would highly recommend if you are in Vancouver, and you're guaranteed to get seasonal, local food so the menu will change regularly - check them out on their website.
