Dinner, The New Inn, Baschurch

I always love a good country pub. You can't beat a beer garden in the summer and warm fire in the winter. We were lucky enough to have warm weather, so we decided to take advantage of the garden at The New Inn in Baschurch. The pub is located opposite the most beautiful church, which can be admired from the pub garden.

I was so pleased to see one of my favourite gin's on offer at the bar, Blue Bottle Gin. Usually you can only find this Gin in Guernsey (where it is made) or Gin Bars. A little country pub in Shropshire was the last place I was planning on seeing it, such a treat.

My starter was the Gin Cured Salmon. The cucumber with a few pieces of soda bread made the dish light and full of flavour and texture. It was the perfect size portion to start the meal.

The Smoked Newport 'quiche' was an interesting twist on a British classic. And when I say interesting, I don't mean in a good way. It tasted and felt more like a block of cream cheese than a quiche.

On to mains and I had the 10oz Rib Eye Steak with a garlic butter sauce. I did order the steak medium rare, however it was defiantly more on the medium size. Even so, you could tell that it was a very good quality piece of beef as it was beautifully soft and melted in the mouth. The onion rings were also delicious and crunchy. There is nothing worse than a soggy onion ring, so these did not disappoint.

Like the steak, the Lamb was unfortunately also overcooked. It came with potato 'three ways' which were mash, fondant and a jacket with a side of veg. It was all very tasty, but jacket potato seemed like an odd side for this dish. It would have been nicer to have a larger portion of fondant rather than all three types of potato.

On to dessert and we ordered a Nutella Pizza for the table as well as a few extra desserts, as we were being real fatties. The Nutella Pizza was so tasty and I would highly recommend sharing one of these.

I also ordered one of the specials, toffee waffle. You would think it would be a little sickly, but the ice cream cut through the sauce perfectly.

Special - Waffle, toffee sauce and honeycombe ice cream

Even though the meats for the mains were slightly overcooked, the overall meal was very good. The service was also great. I would happily to go back to The New Inn any time for dinner.
