Afternoon Tea, The Plaza, New York (2017)
As I mentioned in my previous blog, during this time of quarantine we are spending time looking back at meals and venues we visited before starting our blog. We have been focusing on Afternoon Tea's most recently because what is better than tea and cake at a time like this?
This Afternoon Tea is actually with my other sister-in-law as we all headed to New York together for a few days in 2017. As my brother had always wanted to have Afternoon Tea at The Plaza, we decided it would be the perfect place to rest our tired feet and refuel.
First observation when we first went into The Palm Court dining room was that the staff were actually quite rude to us. It felt like we were an imposition by being there, which is quite impressive when you have 4 people willing to spend around $100 per head on tea and cake. We almost didn't stay, but my brother really wanted to tick it off his bucket list, so we decided to ignore the rude staff and continue anyway.
When the Afternoon Tea arrived, I was surprised to see that the sweet and savoury dishes arrived at the same time, rather than as two separate courses. This also meant that there was no change of cutlery between courses. I recall asking for a change of cutlery before moving on to sweets and the staff were extremely unimpressed at my request!
The savoury course was all very nice however the sweet course was rather disappointing. Everything looked beautiful and even though this was back in 2017, I recall very clearly how we all discussed that the sweets didn't really have much flavour and that they didn't taste that different to each other.
Things may have changed since 2017, but if I was asked if I would recommend this Afternoon Tea based on our personal experience, I would say go elsewhere. It was a real shame but nonetheless we enjoyed our time together as a group and my overriding memory of this day was spending time with my nearest and dearest.
